As we are quickly approaching wasp season you will start to notice activity levels increasing.
As the wintering queens emerge from hibernation, they are in search to find a suitable place to build their new home and start their family.
These areas can be underground, in sheds and garages, trees, people’s homes or businesses but most commonly lofts and roof spaces.
At this time of the year wasps will not bother you too much.
But as the nest grows in size the wasps become more of a problem.
As the nest develops at the start of the year numbers of wasps will quickly grow. The hotter sunnier days are ideal for wasps, and you will generally see more activity on these sorts of days. Cloudier and rainy days you will tend to see much less activity.
By the time it’s fully built, an average sized nest, at its peak, will typically hold 15-25,000 wasps.
A wasp nest will typically reach its peak around July to August depending on the weather. The warmer it is in the earlier months (around April or May) the sooner the nests will be built.
The colder the weather at the start of the year, the later the nests may be built.
At the start of their season wasps usually feed on small insects in your gardens, whereas towards the end of the season when the insects start to hibernate, as the food becomes scarce the wasps will change their feeding patterns for more sugary substances such as rotting fruit, cans of pop, beer and wine.
At this point the wasps will start to take more risks and invade human spaces, being a nuisance whilst out in the garden or enjoying barbecues, playing in the park or other outdoor activities. Anything really where there is a food source for them readily available.
Things to do and things most certainly not to do!
On bright sunny days have a walk around the outside of your property looking around the gutters and bottoms of roof tiles. If you have a nest, you will see the wasps coming in and out on a regular basis.
Be vigilant in your gardens around bins, compost heaps, bushes, and trees.
There are many bushes and trees within your garden that will attract wasp activity. In some cases, it can draw wasps from nearby nests to these areas, it doesn’t always mean that there is a nest in your tree or bush!
Do not go into your loft or roof space searching for nests with a torch or any other form of light as wasps are attracted to light. You will most likely regret it as there will be many more of them than there are of you. Always observe from the outside!
If you have any suspicion that you have a wasp nest in your home or business, we would always recommend calling on professional wasp control help.
One of the first things many people do is turn to social media for advice, where you will tend to receive all kinds of crazy ideas, such as ‘set fire to it’ or ‘go up to the nest and poor ant powder into it’, ‘spray fly spray in to the nest’ – sure these kinds of things would most probably work, however you are more likely to burn your house down or end up at A&E with multiple stings.
This is something that we would never recommend!
There are many safer and easier ways of tackling the nest.
Wasps can be extremely dangerous and in certain scenarios the stings can be fatal.
If you have ever been unlucky enough to be stung by a wasp I think we can agree it causes significant pain and discomfort.
For those of you that have managed to avoid being stung by a wasp in your life, you have done well, congratulations!
As a professional with professional equipment and clothing, I think it is fair to say that even the experts get stung from time to time, I certainly do after being in the business for over 29 years and I still get the odd sting, yes, it is very painful for days.
Some people turn to gardeners and window cleaners. Again, this is something we would not advise unless these types were fully qualified and insured. We can tell you all kinds of horror stories regarding DIY pest control, but we will leave that to another time.
Our philosophy is, that if I needed my gas boiler servicing, my first thought would not be to contact the gardener or window cleaner, I would be looking for a gas safe engineer.
There would be less of a chance of me being blown up or gassed!! I know it sounds daft, but pesticides and rodenticides can be seriously harmful if used incorrectly.
Qualified pest controllers are so for a reason, they have been on courses, passed exams and are experts in their fields. Taking advice from unqualified non-professionals from social media can be dangerous.
It isn’t worth risking families or work colleague’s lives.
Pest control isn’t always that expensive. You will find if you use smaller independent companies such as The Pest Master, you won’t have to remortgage your home.
Most professional companies like us are happy to talk about pest control issues for free. Whether it be by phone or email, it definitely pays to get in touch. This way you will have professional advice. It will take no longer than drafting a post to put on to social media.
In summary, if you think you have an issue with wasps feel free to give us a call. We are always happy to discuss this with you and give you professional advice.
