WHAT DAMAGE CAN SQUIRRELS DO?
It is said that squirrels are responsible for over 300 house fires per year. They definitely cause a lot of damage to your property whilst gaining entry and when they get in they continue to cause mayhem, usually by chewing through your electric cables and sometimes water pipes. You will more than often know you have squirrels by the excessive noise usually within your loft. When you see a squirrel at the bottom of your garden they look very cute and cuddly, however if you come across one in your loft, especially if there are babies in there you will generally find that they can be very aggressive. With their big teeth and claws they can cause serious damage and harm to yourself.
HOW DO I GET RID OF SQUIRRELS?
It is highly recommended not to attempt to get rid of them yourself and leave it to the professionals. Being scratched or bitten by a squirrel can leave you open to contracting a disease such as Lymes Disease, Leptospirosis and Salmonellosis.
If you do decide to carry out a self-treatment using rodenticides or traps within a building, it is good advice to pay particular attention to the presence of bats and their roosts. Bats are heavily protected under UK law and if caught using traps or rodenticides near them or even disturbing them, it is certain prosecution which may lead to imprisonment. Taking into consideration the use of rodenticides purchased by the general public and not only the risk to themselves and others around them, but also that of secondary poisoning of none target species, this is when a rodenticide is placed down in the wrong way allowing other animals to consume it which in most cases would prove fatal.
It is illegal to kill squirrels with rat or mice, or any other kind of poison. If you decide to use traps to self-treat your squirrel issue not only should they be approved for use under the Spring Traps Approval Order 2018, you should also be aware that under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is illegal to release a grey squirrel or allow one to escape back into the wild, they should be dispatched both safely and humanely.
